Green guidance handbook and toolbox are now available in Greek language

After several months of work, we are happy to announce that the Exploring Green Guidance handbook and toolbox are now available in Greek.

The handbook as a starting point for integrating sustainability into career guidance

Exploring Green Guidance: A handbook for practitioners is the central output of the Exploring Green Guidance project. It makes a case for why career guidance needs to respond to the climate crisis, sets out what green guidance is, and shows how it can be practised with different approaches described so that practitioners can find the one that fits their way of working. It looks at how to work with clients and students who hold very different attitudes towards environmental issues, and includes a reflection and guidelines for ethical green guidance – not as a separate current of guidance, but rather as an integrated and by default option with every client and student. The second half moves to practice: green guidance with individuals and groups, and more systemic forms of action such as brokerage, advocacy and lobbying.

Throughout the handbook there are prompts for further reading and reflection, and the tools mentioned in it, developed with the participation of career practitioners from several countries, are collected in the toolbox.

A practical toolbox for different target groups

The toolbox complements the handbook. It is a collection of practical, ready-to-use methods for integrating environmental and social sustainability into guidance work. It goes beyond a narrow focus on “green jobs”, but invites people to reflect on how their education, training and career choices connect with the wider world and contribute to social and ecological wellbeing. The methods are of different kinds: information activities, reflective exercises, decision-making tools, educational resources and critical perspectives on work and are adaptable to young people, adults, career changers and those furthest from the labour market.

Both resources are available for download and consultation on our resources page.

Translation by a committed team from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

“Green guidance is about helping people see the environmental and sustainable dimension of their career choices, not steering them toward a small set of green jobs“, sais Anastasia Vrettou, the coordinator of the translation effort. That idea must reach practitioners and clients in their own language. The challenge of this work was turning it into clear, practical language that career counsellors can use with the populations they work with. Concepts around sustainability, work and career do not translate themselves; finding wording that works in Greek took time and many rounds of discussion.

The translation was prepared by Associate Professor Aikaterini Argyropoulou, Anastasia Vrettou (PhD cand.), Sissy Caravia (PhD cand.) and graduate students Androniki Bouranta, Konstantinos Bourchas and Amalia Gkorou from the master’s programme Counselling, Career Guidance & Lifelong Learning at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Our thanks go to them for the months of careful work behind these publications.

Big plans for green guidance in Greece: training and work on the system level

As Anastasia Vrettou explains: “We plan to share green guidance with the Greek career guidance network and to run a free training for EOPPEP-certified (level A1) career counsellors. The aim is to help them apply green guidance with different populations. Together, we will also explore how green guidance can be adapted to the Greek context and community, so that it reflects local realities, needs and language.“
